2007 Paul S. Sarbanes Spirit Awards
The 2007 Paul S. Sarbanes Spirit Awards recognize individuals who are making a difference in the world as social entrepreneurs and demonstrating the Sarbanes spirit of leadership, integrity, and service. Social entrepreneurs are leading the way in recognizing social problems, seeking new and innovative solutions to those problems, and taking positive action to make social change. Nominees should be individuals who have founded, initiated, and implemented new ideas, programs, or organizations that affect positive social change for the common good. The awards were established by the Anne Arundel Community College Paul S. Sarbanes Center for Public and Community Service.

Paul S. Sarbanes is a former United States Democratic Senator who represented the state of Maryland. Serving from 1977 to 2007, Sarbanes was the longest serving senator in Maryland history. During his service, one of his most distinguished contributions was the enactment of the Sarbanes-Oxley Act of 2002 that introduced significant legislative changes to financial practice and corporate governance regulation. As a tribute to his support to higher education and his service to the communities in Maryland, Anne Arundel Community College created the Paul S. Sarbanes Center for Public and Community Service.
About the Sarbanes Center at Anne Arundel Community College
The Sarbanes Center provides leadership and support to applied learning activities for the college and the community it serves. These activities offer college participants – students, faculty, and staff – hands-on opportunities to learn through real-world experiences, working with government agencies, schools, businesses, and nonprofit organizations.
The Center seeks to build sustainable partnerships with the community to match the learning needs of the college community with the needs of the community it serves. Through effective collaboration across the disciplines and within the community, the Sarbanes Center enhances learning among members of the college community while it strengthens the community.
