Protest Photos in the Press

at 11:00AM to 12:30PM -

Terry Marshall, a Ph.D. candidate in the Department of Communication, Culture and Media Studies in Howard University’s School of Communication, will speak about how civil rights protests are reported in the media with a focus on the use of photography. His work “seeks to identify whether images published in mainstream media, the Black press and social media present an accurate representation and complete picture to media consumers (including reasons for the protest) about protest events, or remain consistent in presenting hegemonic frames of power and control that perpetuated pre-existing stereotypes of Blacks.”
