Dental Assisting and Radiology

Dental assistants perform duties such as preparing instruments and materials required to treat patients; obtaining and updating patients’ dental records, working with the dentist during dental procedures and instructing patients on postoperative and general oral health care. They may prepare materials for impressions and restorations and process dental X-rays.

What is the job outlook?
Demand for dental assistants is expected to grow 36 percent through 2018, one of the fastest growing occupations. The average annual salary of dental assistants in Maryland is $34,000.

What is the training?
Training consists of a single noncredit course that typically is held each term. Students learn the basic skills necessary to work as an entry-level dental assistant in as little as 10 weeks. Students will review dental anatomy, terminology, restorative materials, infection control and chair-side techniques. The course also prepares students for the Dental Assisting National Board’s Radiology Certification Examination and is approved by the U.S. Department of Veterans Affairs. Total Hours: 90

What credentials can I earn?
Upon successful completion, students earn an AACC continuing education certificate. To receive the certificate students complete and submit the form to our office. The form and instructions can be found at www.aacc.edu/coned/certificates.

What will it cost?

Students must have a high school diploma or have passed the GED exam.
