AACC's 50th Anniversary
For 50 inspiring years, AACC has been meeting community needs through education and job training. Established in 1961, AACC’s first classes--all 48 of them--were held in the evenings at Severna Park High School. The classes were attended by 270 students and served by 33 faculty and staff. Today, AACC proudly offers more than 2,800 courses, has 2,600 faculty and staff and is attended by more than 53,000 students. We will be marking our celebration from fall 2011 through spring 2013. That’s 50 years from the time students entered our doors through the year we held our first graduation.
Advertising Campaign
We kicked off our 50th anniversary year this fall with a new advertising campaign called "Get Inspired" which included television, radio and print advertisements, as well as banners and signs around campus. Learn more. Learn more at www.aacc.edu/getinspired.
Gala
In October, the AACC Foundation’s annual gala, appropriately themed "Still Golden" was held at the Truxton Recreation Center and attended by more than 380 friends, staff, faculty and community supporters. The AACC Foundation raised a record $320,000 for student scholarships and special academic programs that are not possible through traditional funding sources.
White House Recognition
A month earlier, AACC graduate Marlena Clark was invited to the White House to sit with First Lady Michelle Obama at President Obama's address on jobs to both houses of Congress. Later that month, U.S. Secretary of Labor Hilda L. Solis visited AACC to discuss the award of $500 million in national job training and retraining grants to U.S. colleges.Learn more about at www.aacc.edu/studentsuccess2020.
Community Outreach
In December, AACC hosted the Greater Chesapeake Girls on the Run 5K for more than 300 3rd through 8th grade girls accompanied by adult running buddies and supporters. GOTR is a life-changing, non-profit program that integrates running with character building and inspires girls to be joyful, healthy and confident.
Continuing along our theme of inspiring and being inspired by young people, this January, AACC's STEM program will be hosting a FIRST® LEGO® League qualifier tournament for students from ages 9 to 16.
