futures thinking ... looking ahead

Some view charter schools for K – 12 schools as the hope of the future. Others view these schools as local government shirking its responsibility to insure a thorough and balanced education – uninfluenced by profit driven motives. Diane Ravitch, a New York University professor, has written extensively on this issue. This article by Margaret Raymond offers a comparison of the two systems.

FiveThirthyEight, or 538, is a website founded by statistician Nate Silver, author of The Signal and the Noise. The website and the book share a theme: better data analysis helps us to plan for the future better. The 538 site features data and commentary on a variety of issues from politics, economics, science, life, and sports. Since re-launched in March 2014 under the ownership of ESPN, the site has received mixed reviews. Nate Silver continues as editor-in-chief of 538.
