Triclosan, an antibacterial compound found in many consumer products, was recently banned from consumer personal care products in Minnesota (effective January 1, 2017) due to growing concerns about its safety, efficacy, role in antibiotic resistance, and adverse affects in the environment. While triclosan is an effective antibacterial agent, most studies indicate that it does not lead to fewer infections. The Food and Drug Administration has proposed a new rule which will require product manufactures to prove its efficacy. Additional studies indicate that triclosan is an endocrine disrupter. Triclosan is found in the urine of many people, including children, but not at levels thought to cause harm. Other studies indicate it leads to increased antibiotic resistance. Ultimately, triclosan finds its way to the aquatic environment from sewage treatment plant effluent or direct application as a pesticide. It was first registered as a pesticide in 1969. The Environmental Protection Agency (EPA) did some data reviews and issued a report on triclosan in 2008, but EPA is currently conducting another review. These sites of the Center for Disease Control, Mayo Clinic, and Beyond Pesticides offer additional information
