futures thinking ... looking ahead

The future of the important commercial and recreational fisheries of the Gulf of Mexico is at risk due to a huge "dead zone", or hypoxic (low oxygen) zone. This is fueled by runoff containing nitrogen and phosphorus compounds from the Mississippi River Watershed, which drains about 41% of the land of the continuous U.S. This runoff promotes a spike in algae growth, which consume valuable oxygen in their decomposition after death. The Louisiana Universities Marine Consortium details the process, and the National Oceanic and Atmospheric Administration (NOAA) recently issued a report.

Antiobiotics in farm animal feed is an increasing concern. Currently, most food-producing animals are raised in confined animal feeding operations (CAFOs), and are fed feed mixed with antiobiotics on a daily basis. As a result, pathogens are evolving to antibiotic-resistant strains, potentially ultimately affecting human health. Recently the Johns Hopkins Center for a Livable Future issued a report on the issue. Earlier this year, the Ontario Medical Association of Canada issued a report calling for a ban on adding antibiotics to animal feed.
