Futures Exercise for BPA 211 or BPA 212 (Business)

Prepared by Professor Lawrie Gardner

Assistant Professor of Accounting, BCTS Anne Arundel CC

Purpose of Exercise: To get students to think about the impact of the future in the
accounting profession.

Classroom Discussions of the Following Topics:

Future of Internal Controls: Coca-Cola Enterprises has been the target of computer
hackers. Important financial information has been taken. Discuss how this could be
avoided.

Future of FASB: Government determines the Financial Accounting Standards Board needs
an overhaul.  Discuss how FASB will be affected by future business events (ie. Enron
type debacles).

Future of Business: Gas prices are increasing with no end in sight.  Discuss how this will
affect a company’s finances and what companies might do to alleviate the problem of
increasing gas prices.

Another Thought:  Each BPA 211 student has to complete a computer project as part of
the course requirement. I would like to structure the assignment so students would have
to take the project one step further by using a couple of different scenarios to see how
the financial statements are affected by changes in the economy.
