applied foresight... using the perspective
What is the real cost of a new TV, or a new car? Read about Life Cycle Assessment, which considers the emissions and the consumptions of resources at each stage in the life of a product. The United Nations Environment Programme and other international organizations cooperate in this initiative to promote sustainable development.
Is escalating random violence an inevitable aspect of our future? Some scholars say no, if our society takes certain concrete steps toward prevention. The World Health Organization produced the World Report on Violence and Health in 2002. Among its goals are "to raise awareness about the problem of violence globally, and to make the case that violence is preventable." The lengthy report concludes with an extensive list of Internet resources. At the University of Colorado, the Center for the Study and Prevention of Violence promotes research and provides technical assistance for violence prevention programs. Additionally, Irvin Waller, Professor of Criminology at the University of Ottawa, discusses his research findings in his book Less Law, More Order (Praeger Publishers, 2006).
