A tsunami warning system was recently tested in the Caribbean region under the auspices of UNESCO (U.N. Educational, Scientific and Cultural Organization). A total of 34 nations participated in the tsunami alert simulation, which revealed a number of gaps in the transmission of information. This simulation is providing crucial data for developing a highly reliable warning system.

Earthquake studies, including scenario planning as well as hazard and tsunami information, are presented on the U.S. Geological Services Web site.

The annual World Water Day was recently celebrated in Cape Town, South Africa to emphasize the importance of freshwater and to advocate for sustainable management of fresh water resources. In conjunction with this event, "Big Splash" was launched -- a global chemistry experiment involving testing water quality by school children all over the world. Big Splash is jointly sponsored by UNESCO and the International Union of Pure and Applied Chemistry as part of the International Year of Chemistry.

RainScaping employs inexpensive and easy-to-apply methods to reduce stormwater runoff and its resulting pollution to waterways. Additionally, rainscaping recharges the water table and restores habitat. This work is sponsored by a grant from the National Fish and Wildlife Foundation.
