The World Meteorological Organization of the United Nations works to promote international cooperation in weather, climate, hydrology, and related environmental issues. Its associated Intergovernmental Panel On Climate Change recently finalized its Fourth Assessment Report entitled Climate Change 2007. The report finds that warming of the climate system is unequivocal. Both the synthesis report and the shorter summary for policy makers are available.

Promoting environmentally sustainable building practices is the goal of the U.S. Green Building Council. This organization is actively involved in interdisciplinary research and has developed the Leadership in Energy and Environmental Design (LEED) Green Building Rating System. This set of standards covers sustainable site development, water savings, energy efficiency, materials selection, and indoor environmental quality.

In an effort to promote sustainable and healthy urban growth in Annapolis, Maryland, a local grassroots initiative, EnVISIONing Annapolis, sponsored the 2060 Annapolis Design Charrette Conference in April 2008.  The group's goal is to get local Annapolitans involved in contributing to the process of developing plans for the future growth patterns of the city of Annapolis. The conference involved reviewing future growth scenarios developed by architects, professors and students of architecture from Catholic University, Morgan State University, University of Maryland College Park and Virginia Tech. The Citizen's Feedback Report  was compiled by the Institute for the Future at Anne Arundel Community College.

This July, students of a special section of FTR-100, "Exploring the Future", will participate at the World Future Society Annual Meeting in Washington, D.C. Offered by Anne Arundel Community College, FTR-100 is a 3 credit-hour general education college course. Registration is now open for this section, as well as for the totally online section.

Recently FTR 100 earned the designation as a diversity course at Anne Arundel Community College (effective Fall 2008). Students seeking an associate's degree at AACC are required to earn 3 credit-hours in a diversity course. The study of the future, using its well-developed methodology, incorporates the many aspects of diversity, promotes awareness of social issues, and fosters effective citizenship.
