Several countries are actively researching Thorium-232 as an alternative nuclear fuel to Uranium-235. Among Thorium’s apparent advantages are its greater efficiency in energy conversion, its greater abundance, & its incapability of producing weapons material. This article in the Journal of Energy Security, published by the Institute for the Analysis of Global Security, offers interesting details and insights. More information is available from the World Nuclear Organization.

Article submissions are being accepted for a special issue of the Journal of Futures Studies, the April 2010 issue entitled "So You Want to Teach the Future?". The guest editor, Stephen F. Steele of IF @ AACC, is looking for three types of work: (1) Articles of roughly 5,000-7,000 words that provide descriptions, discussions and case studies of how to teach the future. All articles are refereed by two reviewers; (2) Anecdotal essays, around 3000 words or so, with a spotlight on teaching futures and foresight, and (3) Future GIFTS - great ideas for futures teaching. Content will be negotiated between author and editor. The deadline for submissions is November 30, 2009. See details on the /future/callforarticles.cfm

Stratospheric ozone offers protection from harmful ultraviolet radiation, while tropospheric ozone is a pollutant causing a number of health problems. Stratospheric ozone-depleting chlorofluorocarbons (CFCs) are globally decreasing following the 1996 phase-out of their production mandated by the Montreal Protocol, a positive sign. Meanwhile the study of ozone depletion continues. This National Aeronautics & Space Administration (NASA) Earth Observatory article describes ozone monitoring and ongoing studies.
