Medical Coding Certificate (Pending MHEC approval)

Obtaining a medical coding certificate (23 credit hours) will provide students with eligibility status to sit for the Certified Professional Coder Examination (CPC) offered by the American Academy of Professional Coders.

Program Admission Requirements

  • Attendance at a free orientation seminar (no registration required).
  • Submit an application by the deadline. For the fall 2012 class, applications are available onlinePDF and in Florestano 306. The application deadline is March 15, 2012.
  • Eligibility for ENG 111 or ENG 115 or ENG 121.
  • Take the Arithmetic Placement Test and score a 27 or higher or enroll in MAT 005 and earn a grade of "C" or better.
  • Submit current American Heart Association CPR for Health Care Providers certification, a completed health examination record, and criminal background check.
  • Completion of the following prerequisite courses: BIO 231-BIO 232 or BIO 233-BIO 234, CSI 113, MDA 113 and MDA 114.

HET 111 - Introduction to Health Information Technology (3)
RXN 211 - Pharmacology for Health Professions (3)
MDA 217 - Introduction to ICD-9-CM and ICD-10-CM Coding (3)
MDA 218 - Introduction to CPT/HCPCS and ICD-10-PCS Coding (3)

Term 2 (weeks 1-11)

MDA 116 - Fundamentals of Managed Care (3)
HET 222 - Reimbursement Methodologies (3)
MDA 221 - Advanced Coding (3)

Term 2 (weeks 12-15) 

MDA 276 - Medical Coding Practicum (2)
MDA 276 internship requires 90 hours of unpaid work experience in a physician's office or wherever medical coding skills are required.
