Medical Assisting Degree

The medical assisting degree program (61 credits) prepares students for employment in physicians' offices, hospitals, clinics, medical departments of industry and government and wherever basic office and clinical skills are required. 

Range of Occupations

  • Administrative assistant to a physician
  • Medical assistant - ambulatory health care facility
  • Medical office manager

Program Admission Requirements

  • Attendance at a free orientation seminar (no registration required)
  • High school graduate or equivalency 
  • Eligibility for ENG 111
  • Take the Arithmetic Placement Test and receive a score of 27 or better by the application deadline. Only one retake of this test is allowed. If a student took the former Health Professions Arithmetic Placement test prior to June 1, 2009 and scored a 19 out of 25 or better, that score will be sufficient.
    Students receiving a score of less than 27 on the retake must enroll in MAT 005 and complete it with a grade of "C" or better by the application deadline. A grade of "C" or higher in MAT 005 will meet the requirement for the Arithmetic Placement Test.
  • Submit current BLS CPR certification by American Heart Association for Health Care Providers and a completed health examination record prior to starting MDA 275 and complete a criminal background check. See program coordinator.
  • Must be 18 years or older for clinical coursework and practicum

*Successful completion of ENG 121 fully satisfies the college English composition general education requirement. Students who take ENG 121 and not ENG 111-112 may need to take an additional elective course to ensure that they complete a minimum of 60 credit hours which are required for the award of an associate degree.   

**BIO 231-232 or BIO 233-234 may be substituted for BIO 230.

***RXN 211 medical assisting prerequisites: MDA 113, MDA 115, MDA 117.

+Practicum (MDA 275) internship requires 160 hours of unpaid supervised work experience in a physician's office or wherever medical office administration with clinical skills is required. Eligibility: Completion of all courses required for the MDA certificate with a minimum of 2.0 GPA; meeting the technical standards of the Medical Assisting department.

All medical assisting students must receive a minimum grade of "C" in each medical assisting course and students must also meet the technical standards of the medical assisting department.

Anne Arundel Community College's Medical Assisting program is accredited by the Commission on Accreditation of Allied Health Education Programs upon the recommendation of the Medical Assisting Education Review Board (MAERB).
