Anne Arundel Community College is celebrating Social Justice Week, April 16 to 20, with a number of activities and events.

A Meeting of the Minds: From the Cradle to the Prison Pipeline

Food starting at 5:30 p.m., event from 6-9 p.m., April 17
This Meeting of the Minds will feature a screening of the award-winning documentary “13th,” followed by a group dialogue addressing the topics revealed in the film. Food provided.

Protest Photos in Mainstream Black Press

11 a.m. to 12:15 p.m. April 19
Terry Marshall, a doctoral candidate in the Department of Communication, Culture, and Media Studies in Howard University’s School of Communications, will speak about how racial issues are reported in the media with a focus on the use of photography. His work “seeks to identify whether images published in mainstream media, the black press and social media present an accurate representation and complete picture to media consumers (including reasons for the protest) about protest events, or remain consistent in presenting hegemonic frames of power and control that perpetuated pre-existing stereotypes of blacks.” Location TBA.

“At AACC we want to encourage our students to be active members of our community and to be politically engaged around whatever issues are important to them. Social Justice Week allows us to offer programming that models different types of community engagement,” said Heather Rellihan, professor and coordinator of Gender and Sexuality Studies and chair of the Social Justice Collaborative. “I hope, through their participation in the events of Social Justice Week, students see why it’s important to be engaged citizens and active community members, and that they learn to use their voice and believe that their voice matters.”

Social Justice Week is sponsored by the Social Justice Collaborative. If you have questions about events or activities, contact Rellihan at hrellihan@aacc.edu or 410-777-1233.
