Black History Month Celebrated with Special Events

Jan. 7, 2005

Events

Show off your knowledge about black history in a spirited game of Black Jeopardy, discover how quilts were used to guide slaves to freedom or see some popular movies on the black experience when Anne Arundel Community College celebrates February as Black History Month.

Most of the events are free and are sponsored by the college’s Black Student Union.

Step Afrika!, a percussive dance ensemble based in Washington, D.C., will begin the month’s activities with a performance at 7:30 p.m. Saturday, Jan. 29, at the Pascal Center for Performing Arts on AACC’s Arnold campus, 101 College Parkway. This event, co-sponsored by the AACC Student Association and the AACC Black Student Union, is the only one requiring admission.

Tickets cost $10 for general admission, $8 for senior citizens, AACC employees and children 12 and under and $6 for AACC students. Tickets go on sale at the box office, 410-777-2457, Jan. 24 or may be purchased an hour before the show.

As a lead-in to a Black History Month exhibit at the Pascal Center for Performing Arts Gallery, the BSU will have displays and giveaways from noon to 2 p.m. Feb. 2 in the dining hall on the Arnold campus, 101 College Parkway.

Librarians at AACC’s Truxal Library have compiled an exhibit, “Cover Story: Quilting as an African-American Legacy,” Jan. 14-Feb. 25 in the library foyer. The display of books and materials explores the many ways in which African-Americans used the quilt -- artistic expression and beauty, family history and tradition, spirituality and religion, a source of income and clothing, for safekeeping and comfort and as a secret language to help fugitive slaves escape to the North during the 19th century.

The library exhibit is open 8 a.m.-10 p.m. Mondays-Thursdays, 8 a.m.-5 p.m. Fridays, 9 a.m.-5 p.m. Saturdays and noon-5 p.m. Sundays. For information, call 410-777-2456 or e-mail refdesk@aacc.edu.

The Black Student Union will bring two popular movies to campus as part of the observance of Black History Month. “Ray” stars Jamie Foxx in a film biography of singer, songwriter Ray Charles. “Two Can Play That Game,” a romantic comedy, stars Vivica A. Fox as an arrogant career woman who plays heartless tricks on her boyfriend played by Morris Chestnut.

Both films are free and scheduled from noon to 3 p.m. in the Center for Applied Learning and Technology Room 107. “Ray” runs Monday, Feb. 7, and “Two Can Play That Game” Monday, Feb. 14.

Other events include a presentation, “Sistahs Speak Out: Hip Hop,” noon to 2 p.m. Wednesday, Feb. 23, in the Florestano Building Room 101, and a game, “Black Jeopardy,” from 12:30 to 2 p.m. Friday, Feb. 25, in Student Union Room 100.

For information about all events except Step Africa! and the quilting exhibit, call 410-777-2284.  Call disability support services, 410-777-1307, or Maryland Relay 711 at least 72 hours in advance to request special accommodations.
