Take Spring Classes Grouped by Themes

Dec. 11, 2006

Education

Join the same group of students in any of four sets of spring credit classes, with each set of classes following the same theme, through the Anne Arundel Community College Thematic Learning Communities initiative.

The four communities focus on themes such as "Women of Their Word: Exploring Women’s Voices through Writing and Oratory," "Speaking of History: Connecting with History Through Speech," "Altered Landscapes: The Changing Environment through the Eyes of Scientists and Writers" and "Questioning Authority: An Investigation of Societal Beliefs and Assumptions through the Study of Communications and Literature."

To enroll in a specific community group, register for each class individually using the specific course number and matching section numbers.

For example, sign up for "Composition and Literature" (ENG 121) Section 070 and "Fundamentals of Oral Communication" (COM 111) Section 070 to be enrolled in "Women of Their Word: Exploring Women’s Voices through Writing and Oratory."

This community of courses takes students on a journey through literature and public speeches written and delivered by women to audiences worldwide. Read about and research notable women and women’s issues of the past and present, while practicing public speaking.

For the course cluster, "Speaking of History: Connecting with History Through Speech," enroll in "History of the United States 1" (HIS 211) Section 071 and "Fundamentals of Oral Communication" (COM 111) Section 071. Study the themes of American history and gain presentation skills.

Or, mix the study of natural science and the humanities to explore human impact on the environment in "Altered Landscapes: The Changing Environment through the Eyes of Scientists and Writers." The courses are: "Environmental Science" (BIO 107) Section 072 and "Introduction to Composition and Literature" (ENG 121) Section 072.

For the cluster "Questioning Authority: An Investigation of Societal Beliefs and Assumptions through the Study of Communications and Literature," enroll in both "Composition and Literature" (ENG 121) Section 073 and "Fundamentals of Oral Communication" (COM 111) Section 073. Discuss and debate issues involving authority as you find your individual voice as a writer.

Registration is under way. Current and returning students can register online at
