AACC Dance Workshop Teaches Moves, Techniques

Dec. 18, 2006

Events

Expand your dance repertoire and polish your technique at a January Anne Arundel Community College Dance Company workshop led by TV dance star Jamile McGee, a dance company alumnus joining alumnus Lance Guillermo and California dancer Chris Scott.

The workshop, "Jammin’ with Jamile, Lance & Chris," takes place from 9 a.m.-3:15 p.m. Saturday, Jan. 6. On-site registration takes place at 8 a.m. in Jenkins Gymnasium on the AACC Arnold campus, with classes in the gym and Cade Center for Fine Arts.

McGee danced his way to fame after surviving multiple auditions in Maryland, New York City and Hollywood, becoming one of 16 dancers nationwide selected for the Fox reality show, "So You Think You Can Dance." At the final show, when the four remaining contestants performed for the judges, McGee won third place.

The trio will teach advanced beginners through experienced dancers ages 8 and up a variety of dance styles: old and new school hip hop, popping, breaking, jazz funk and tap. All sessions except the last one of the day offer classes by skill level. Open classes are for all skill levels, advanced beginners and up, while "experienced" classes are limited to those with at least three years of dance training.

The 9-10:15 a.m. session offers "New School Hip Hop" for experienced dancers focusing on choreography like that on MTV and most current music videos. All dancers can join the open class in "Popping," which features instruction in isolated, intricate, robotic movements in boogaloo style.

From 10:30-11:45 a.m., attend "Old School Hip Hop," an open class, or "Tap" for experienced tap dancers. "Old School Hip Hop" covers the true foundation of this dance form including movement from the "Running Man" era. Technique is less complex than new school hip hop.

From 12:30-1:45 p.m., dancers attend "Jazz Funk" if they are experienced dancers or "Breaking," an open class. "Jazz Funk" features a blend of jazz, hip hop, turns and movement progressions across the floor. "Breaking" involves movement that takes you to the floor. Learn the traditional style of movement that allows the body to explore the earth from all angles.

The workshop concludes with "Combined Styles and Jam Session" for all dancers from 2-3:15 p.m.

The cost is $75 per person payable by cash or check. To register in advance, request a registration form from AACC Dance Company director Lynda Fitzgerald, 410-777-7021 or lpfitzgerald@aacc.edu. Registration is first come, first served; those under age 18 must have a parent or guardian sign the form. If space permits on the day of the workshop, dancers may register at the gym from 8-9 a.m.
