National Honor Roll Includes AACC Center

Dec. 21, 2006

Education

The Anne Arundel Community College Paul S. Sarbanes Center for Public and Community Service is included on the first President’s Higher Education Community Service Honor Roll for its outstanding community outreach.

The college is one of two community colleges and a total of seven Maryland institutions included in the 492 institutions named to the honor roll. President George W. Bush created the listing to increase public awareness of the contributions college students are making within their communities.

The Sarbanes Center, established in fiscal year 2006, oversees the AACC Center for Learning Through Service as well as other college centers such as the Environmental Center and Center for the Study of Local Issues. The Center for Learning Through Service received the Community College National Center for Community Engagement’s annual Service Learning and Civic Engagement Collaboration Award for International Service Learning for its Global Giving Market. It also passed the $1 million mark in total value of community service during the 2006 fiscal year.

Honor roll sponsors are the Corporation for National and Community Service, the President’s Council on Service and Civic Participation, the USA Freedom Corps, U.S. Department of Education and U.S. Department of Housing and Urban Development. For Sarbanes Center information, call 410-777-2902.
