Dec. 18, 2006

Education

Students at Annapolis High School held onto their first-place tournament position and won the third round of the 2006-07 Anne Arundel County High School Mathematics Competition at Anne Arundel Community College.

Following in second place overall and for the round was Severna Park High School. Severn School and Chesapeake High School tied for third place.

Organized by AACC, the competition is a series of five matches divided into two phases. In the first phase, students work individually to answer as many of six questions as possible during a 30-minute period. In this round, Huaiyu Wu of Annapolis High and David McAllister of Severna Park High answered all six questions correctly. In the second phase, students work in teams of up to five members each to answer another set of six questions in 30 minutes. Two teams, Annapolis High and Severna Park High, tied for the highest team score of four correct answers.

School scores are computed by adding the best team score to the average of the top three individuals’ scores.

Participating in the third round on Dec. 9 were 146 students representing teams from 12 county public and private high schools plus a team of independents composed of home-schooled students.

Third-round scores were: Annapolis High, 9.0; Severna Park High, 8.33; Chesapeake High and Severn School, 5.33; Broadneck High, 5.0; North County and Old Mill high schools, tied at 4.67; Archbishop Spalding, Arundel High, the independents and Northeast High, all tied at 4.33; South River High, 3.67; and Key School, 3.0.
