Eight Anne Arundel Community College students are interning during the 2006 session of the Maryland General Assembly in Annapolis this spring term.
Student interns earn three college credits by enrolling in the "Legislative Internship: Practicum" course at AACC taught by former House of Delegates member Frank B. Pesci Sr., Ph.D., a political science faculty member and coordinator of the college’s legislative internship program. This year’s General Assembly Legislative Intern Program gives 88 students from Maryland colleges, universities and community colleges the chance to provide research and staff assistance to legislators, while gaining educational and practical work experience in state government.
This term’s AACC students are: Corey Averill of Shady Side, Peter Ildesonso of Severna Park, Emmanuelle Kombet of Severn, Krystal Ridgley of Lothian, James Ryon of Bowie, LaToya Truxon of Glen Burnie, Keith Walmsley of the United Kingdom and Amelia Whitman of Galesville.
Interested in a career in international relations, Whitman said the internship has allowed her excellent access into the world of local politics and lawmaking.
"I’ve always been interested in politics and here I get to see how all the laws work at a local level," she said. "I have so many resources right at my fingertips."
Whitman said she hopes the internship provides enough solid experience to help her transfer to a top regional four-year university, such as American University and George Washington University in Washington, D.C., where she plans to double major in International Relations and French.
To enter the program, AACC students interviewed with Pesci in October; those accepted enroll in the class and interview for placement with legislators, committees or caucuses of the Maryland General Assembly.
Legislative duties vary and include conducting research, drafting correspondence, contacting witnesses for hearings on proposed legislation, attending committee hearings, tracking bills, working on mailings, handling constituent problems, writing newsletters preparing, recording and reporting testimony. Interns receive stipends to help offset program costs.
The 2006 session of the Maryland General Assembly ends Monday, April 10. For information, call Pesci at 410-777-2759.
