Grants Available for Part-time College Students

July 1, 2005

Education

Thinking about starting that college degree this fall?

Don’t let the cost of tuition and fees block your success. Financial assistance is available to both part-time and full-time students. Tap into an expanded grant program set up to support those community college students who have many commitments and enroll in a few courses at a time.

Grants of $200 to $1,000 are available to qualified students who enroll for six to 11 credit hours. If you could only afford one three-credit class this fall at Anne Arundel Community College, for example, the grant will help you afford two, three or four classes so you can speed your progress toward a degree. Fall credit classes at AACC get under way Aug. 29, Sept. 12 and Oct. 24.

"AACC has a sizeable amount of grant money to award and we’re seeking students who are qualified to use the funds," said Richard Heath, AACC director of student financial services.

To apply, fill out a Free Application for Federal Student Aid (FAFSA) available through AACC or online by going to "Apply for Grants, Loans, and Work Programs" at www.aacc.edu/aid/applyfafsa.cfm

"The process is free and a lot easier than most people think," Heath said. "You will need to have your most recent tax returns handy to fill out the application."

To be considered for an award you must:

- Be enrolled in a degree program for at least six but fewer than 12 credits,

- Be a permanent Maryland resident,

- Demonstrate financial need,

- Not be in default of a Federal Family Education Loan or owe a refund for any previous financial aid received,

- Pledge to remain drug free and

- Maintain satisfactory academic progress.

For information, call the AACC Student Financial Services office at 410-777-2203, e-mail finaid@aacc.edu or visit in person.
