AACC Hosts Astronomy Club Open House
March 10, 2006
Open House
Discover the violent side of our universe, X-ray astronomy at an Astronomy Club open house from 7-10 p.m. Saturday, April 22, at Anne Arundel Community College.
Wayne L. Waldron, Ph.D., part-time AACC instructor, will discuss "The X-ray Monster Lurking in the Center of Our Galaxy" from 7-8 p.m. in the Henry L. Dragun Science Building Room 110 on the Arnold campus, 101 College Parkway. After refreshments and a question-and-answer session with Waldron, bring your telescope or binoculars to a stargazing session from 8:30-10 p.m. at the Astronomy Building near parking lot A/B, weather permitting.
Waldron will explore the cause and effect of the "invisible" x-ray radiation, produced by highly energetic phenomena, traveling throughout our universe. You will also hear about the daily x-ray activity on the sun, as well as the x-ray emission from more bizarre objects such as neutron stars, black holes and "supermassive" black holes.
Educated at Ohio State University and the University of Wisconsin, Waldron is a senior scientist with L-3 Communications Government Services Inc. He has studied universal x-ray phenomena for more than 25 years and has published more than 40 scientific papers on the subject.
The AACC Astronomy Club works with the Astronomy Department in the college’s science program but is also open to the community. For information, call 410-777-1820.
