Teaching students the intricacies of video game technology and information technology simulation is the goal of a new education articulation agreement signed Friday, March 3, by the University of Baltimore, Anne Arundel Community College and three other Maryland community colleges.
The agreement allows students from AACC, Carroll Community College, Montgomery College and the Community College of Baltimore County the chance to transfer seamlessly into the Simulation and Digital Entertainment (SDE) undergraduate degree program at the University of Baltimore. AACC students who have completed the 65-credit associate degree program in Communication Arts Technology can directly transfer into the 60-credit SDE degree program at the University of Baltimore. Originating in 2003, the program enrolls 50 full-time students at the university.
"There is a tremendous market out there for qualified young professionals in the digital game and simulation industries," said AACC President Martha A. Smith. "This allows AACC students to take advantage of a unique program and work in a growing industry."
Outside of California, Maryland boasts the nation’s highest concentration of companies -- 30 in all -- devoted to computer game development and simulation training programs. According to University of Baltimore officials, employment in the field is expected to grow about 10 percent annually.
Students enrolled in the SDE program learn various and sophisticated information technology tools including: basic and advanced computer programming, 3-D graphics, design and project management, as well as computer science and visual design.
"A degree shows long-term interest in the field," said Kathleen Harmeyer, SDE program director at the University of Baltimore. "It confirms the graduate is not only quite competent but also has developed the necessary critical-thinking skills to succeed."
