AACC Revises, Expands Honors Program

July 1, 2005

Education

Anne Arundel Community College is launching three new seminar-style courses this fall as part of its revised Honors program, which now awards an Honors Seminar Letter of Recognition to those completing three of six Honors credit courses.

The new seminars are "Knowledge and Freedom: An Honors Seminar" (HON 100), "Infinity and Human Perspectives" (HON 125) and "Utopia and Dystopia" (HON 105).

Those who complete any three seminars in any order will earn the Letter of Recognition. All honors seminars count as general education electives at AACC and at four-year institutions and transfer to other honors programs.

"These seminars offer a unique experience in a distinctive program," said Rebecca Kajs, Ph.D., professor of English and Honors program coordinator.

Each course sets a problem or inquiry that integrates at least three fields of study. Instructors employ the Socratic method as the primary means of learning.

Enrollment is limited to 20 students per seminar. They meet around a conference table to examine the enduring ideas of the great thinkers after reading their whole, original texts, rather than textbooks.

"It is important to understand that these honors seminars do not mean more work," Kajs said. "It is not about the quantity of material covered or the number of assignments but about quality - discovering and assessing ideas that affect everyone. During this process, students will develop their reading, writing and reasoning skills."

Two of the new seminars will be offered at the Arnold campus. Kajs is teaching "Knowledge and Freedom: An Honors Seminar" (HON 100) from 10-10:50 a.m. Mondays, Wednesdays and Fridays. John Hamman, associate professor of mathematics, will teach "Infinity and Human Perspectives" (HON 125) from 2:30-3:45 p.m. Tuesdays and Thursdays.

Alan Brownlie, Ph.D., associate professor of English, is teaching "Utopia and Dystopia" (HON 105) from 5:30-8:30 p.m. Mondays and Wednesdays at AACC at Arundel Mills in Hanover.

Registration for fall credit classes is under way. Fall classes begin Aug. 29. For information, call 410-777-2809 or go online to www.aacc.edu/honors or e-mail rakajs@aacc.edu.
