Aug. 12, 2005

Parenting Education

Parenting is hard work, but the Family Outreach Network at Anne Arundel Community College can help parents tackle tough issues in today’s society through free lunchtime and evening discussions this fall.

Bring a brown-bag lunch to join in the daytime discussions from 12:30 to 1:30 p.m. Tuesdays, Sept. 13, Oct. 11 and Nov. 8, in the Cade Center for Fine Arts Room 219 on AACC’s Arnold campus, 101 College Parkway.

Topics are: Sept. 13 -- "There Must Be a Better Way than Spanking" led by Carlesa Finney, project director, AACC Student Achievement and Success Program; Oct. 11 -- "Helping Parents Help Children: Emergent Literacy," led by Barbara S. Garrett, AACC assistant professor of education, TEACH Institute; and Nov. 8 -- "Sound and Sign: Life in a Deaf Family," led by Maureen O’Grady-Hynes, AACC assistant professor of American Sign Language.

In addition, FON sponsors "Let’s Chat About Children: A Town Hall Meeting" each fall and spring. "Will It Hurt? Preparing Kids for Painful Medical Procedures" meets 7:30 to 9 p.m. Thursday, Oct. 27, in the Cade Center for Fine Arts Room 219 on the Arnold campus. A panel of professionals who work with children will suggest ways parents can help their children handle medical procedures.

A new "Focus on Families: An Evening Parenting Series" is a collaboration between the Family Outreach Network and the Community Center in Severna Park. Those sessions meet from 7 to 8 p.m. Wednesdays, Sept. 28, Oct. 26 and Nov. 30, in the Community Center Holy Grounds Youth Center, 623 Baltimore-Annapolis Blvd., Severna Park.

Topics are: Sept. 28 -- "Parenting the Gifted Child" led by Rachelle E. Lipschultz, AACC assistant professor of psychology; Oct. 26 -- "Parenting in Multicultural America" led by Jerina V. Wainwright, Ph.D., AACC professor of psychology; and Nov. 30 -- "Parenting Our Parents" led by panel of mental health professionals. Panelists are Elizabeth H. Appel, AACC associate professor and department chair, human services; Louis L. Aymard Jr., Ph.D., AACC director, Family Outreach Network and professor of psychology; and Donald P. Orso, Ph.D., AACC professor and department chair, psychology.

All events are free. The Family Outreach Network also sponsors noncredit and credit parenting courses. For information about the events or courses, call 410-777-2159.
