The Anne Arundel Workforce Development Corporation (AAWDC) today awarded scholarships totaling $15,000 to six future and currently enrolled Anne Arundel Community College students at a recognition ceremony.
Four students have successfully completed the Step Up to Success program co-sponsored by AACC and AAWDC. The free initiative helps county youth, ages 16-21, prepare for and obtain their GED, secure job skills and employment and transition to college or further training.
Robert Lewis of Baltimore, a North County High School graduate who is enrolling at AACC this fall, received a $5,000 scholarship after successfully completing the WAGES (Work-maturity And Growing Employability Skills) program. AAWDC funds WAGES at Brooklyn Park Middle School to help at-risk eighth graders improve attendance and academic skills and develop work skills by learning time management and organizational skills, participating in field trips, job shadowing and mock job interviews.
AACC student Corey Reid of Lanham received a $3,793 scholarship to participate in the college’s Hospitality, Culinary Arts and Tourism Institute 10-week internship program with world-class chefs on the Amalfi Coast of Italy. Reid is currently in Italy.
All scholarships awards - except the culinary internship - are valid for five years to fund tuition and books. This is the first year AAWDC has given this level of scholarships from its Elizabeth E. Muller Charitable Trust.
Step up to Success scholarship recipients are Matt Campbell of Severn, $405; Randy Hyson of Gambrills, $405; Keith Noipoom of Severn, $5,000; and Danielle Rockey of Foirt Meade, $405. AAWDC funds the Step up to Success program through a grant, with instruction and services taking place at the AACC Sales and Service Training Center at Arundel Mills in Hanover.
Campbell has one more segment of the GED to pass, has obtained his NRF certificate and works as a cook at a local restaurant. He and Hyson plan to pursue culinary studies at AACC.
Noipoom plans to study business management at AACC this fall. Since entering the program, he obtained his GED and a National Retail Federation (NRF) Customer Service Certificate.
Rockey and Hyson took the GED test in June and are awaiting results. Rockey has obtained her NRF certificate and plans to study medical assisting at AACC.
