Softball Coaching Staff, Catcher Honored for Excellence

Sept. 6, 2006

Sports

The National Fastpitch Coaches Association (NFCA) has selected the coaching staff of the Anne Arundel Community College women’s fast-pitch softball team for national honors.

The coaches will head to Arizona in December to receive recognition as the Speedline Coaching Staff of the Year at the NFCA Hall of Fame banquet at the NFCA national convention.

The honors go to Don Bishoff of Pasadena, who recently was named the 2006 Maryland Junior College Athletic Conference (MD JUCO) Coach of the Year, along with his assistants, Kristen Bishoff and Bill Henderson, both of Pasadena, and Ken Stoll of Glen Burnie. They also won recognition as Midwest Region Coaching Staff of the Year.

The team ended the season with a 37-10 record, a conference and a regional championship and a third-place finish in the National Junior College Athletic Association’s (NJCAA) national tournament.

Crucial to the team’s success was the play of catcher Danielle Martinez of Linthicum, named NJCAA Division III Catcher of the Year for a second straight season by Diamond Sports, the NFCA official protective equipment company. Martinez led the team with a .579 batting average, 12 doubles, four triples, four home runs and 45 RBIs. She also recorded 22 assists behind the plate and threw out 11 of 14 attempted base stealers during the 2006 season. A North County High School graduate, Martinez also earned team offensive MVP honors.

The team begins its season in March 2007. For information call the coaches at 410-777-2034.
