Art Exhibit Highlights New Work by AACC Faculty

Sept. 6, 2006

Art

View mixed-media artwork by Dawn Cochran and oil paintings by Marc Boone in a two-person show at the first Anne Arundel Community College art exhibit of the fall term, "Dawn Cochran and Marc Boone: New Works."

Shown through Sept. 25 in the Cade Center for Fine Arts Gallery, this free art show focuses heavily on movement, color and light in subjects as depicted in paintings, quilts, sculptures and other media. Meet the Baltimore residents at 12:30 p.m. Thursday, Sept. 7, at a free artists’ talk in the Cade gallery and return from 6-8 p.m. for a free artists’ reception.

"My artwork is concerned with moments," Cochran said, "the struggle for greater awareness, insight, as well as our bodies’ physical makeup, making it possible for a higher state of consciousness."

Cochran’s works in the show include "Microtubules," a piece made from 15 vinyl tubes filled with colored wires and "An Imperfect Stitch," which uses irregular fabric shapes pieced together with copper thread onto purple corduroy.

Boone’s works include "Talisman to the Heavens XII," in which a cerulean blue field cheers the viewer’s heart while powerfully modeled clouds traverse the space with added allusions to a mountainscape. In "Electrical Storm," a shock of white paint etches through a rich palette of blues from deepest cobalt to robin’s egg lightness only to detonate on a sand-colored form.

Cochran is a full-time art instructor at AACC, while Boone has worked part time at the college for about six years. Boone is represented by the Grimaldis Gallery in Baltimore.

The Cade gallery is on the Arnold campus, 101 College Parkway. Gallery hours are 9 a.m.-4 p.m. weekdays with extended hours of 6-9 p.m. on Wednesdays.
