Sept. 11, 2006

Education

Let the artistic impulses of your creative imagination flow freely by enrolling in one or more of several noncredit continuing education art or music courses offered this fall at Anne Arundel Community College.

Interested students can develop or hone their skills in drawing, glasswork, music, mixed-media art, painting, printmaking, quilting, woodworking and more. Courses are offered at the AACC Arnold campus, 101 College Parkway, and other county sites.

Explore line etching, sugar lift, aquatint, soft ground, drypoint, open-bite and other printmaking techniques emphasizing intaglio in "Printmaking: Methods and Techniques" (ARS 374), $225, a new course offered 9 a.m.-noon Saturdays, Sept. 30-Nov. 18, on the Arnold campus. No prior experience is necessary.

Develop your power of artistic perception and draw from life, memory and imagination in "Drawing Fundamentals" (ARS 348), $164, offered 6:30-9 p.m. Thursdays, Sept. 28-Nov. 16, at Meade Middle School, 1103 26th Street on Fort Meade. Or, use those same powers and focus on lines, tones and colors in still-life arrangements using wet and dry media in "Mixed Media Painting" (ARS 372), $127, offered 6:30-9:30 p.m. Thursdays, Sept. 28-Oct. 26, on the Arnold campus.

Gear up for the holidays by learning to stitch up a decorative 18-inch, country-style holiday pine tree with swatches of colorful flannel in "Holiday Patchwork Tree" (CFT 349), $40, offered 6:30-9:30 p.m. Wednesday, Oct. 25, on the Arnold campus.

Design, cut, assemble and finish an assigned project in "Woodworking Fundamentals: Level 1" (CFT 330), $179, offered 7-9 p.m. Tuesdays, Sept. 19-Oct. 24, at the Earthtone’s Woodshop, 407 Headquarters Drive in Millersville.

Those with a passion for photography or music also have plenty of options. Take "Vocational Photography 1" (PHO 300), $125, offered 7-9:30 p.m. Tuesdays, Sept. 26-Oct. 31, on the Arnold campus and learn basic skills in camera operation and film development. An online digital photography course, "Discover Digital Photography" (PHO 329), $85, offered Sept. 20-Nov. 10, or Oct. 18-Dec. 8, reveals tools, equipment and computer software necessary to make your digital photographs come alive.

Music courses are available in basic, intermediate and advanced instruction in instruments including steel drums, guitar, piano and the Autoharp.

Some courses require prerequisites and prior experience prior to enrollment. Costs listed are for county residents; there is an additional charge of $5 per course for residents of other counties and $10 additional charge per course for out-of-state residents.
