May 24, 2007

Awards

The Student Association of Anne Arundel Community College has honored four members of the faculty for their passion and dedication to their students and their jobs at the annual Honors and Awards Ceremony and Reception.

AACC students presented 2007 Teaching Excellence Awards to:

- Robert Lowe III of Gwynn Oak, instructor of architecture and design, Rookie Professor of the Year.

- Javanika Mody of Millersville, professor of biology, Teaching Excellence for full-time faculty.

- Laura McNeal of Edgewater, lecturer of performing arts, Teaching Excellence for part-time faculty.

- Brent Humphries of Annapolis, part-time instructor, adviser to the Student Association Graphics Arts and Design Club, Adviser of the Year award.

Architecture and Interior Design department chair Michael Ryan nominated Lowe for Rookie of the Year award, citing outstanding end-of-class student opinion forms filled out by his classes.

“This is even more impressive when you consider that he teaches our more challenging technical courses, including advanced computer-aided design,” Ryan said. “His dedication and care for his students’ learning and success is a model for others to follow. His enthusiasm for the subject and expertise in the technical areas is outstanding.”

Students wrote in their nominations that Mody is respected for her accessibility and fairness, and the way she encourages students to succeed. “She sets challenging but realistic goals for us to acquire the knowledge, and runs the class in a disciplined yet friendly way,” a student wrote.

In McNeal’s nomination, one student wrote: “I greatly admire Laura McNeal’s use of a positive, constructive and enthusiastic approach to teaching ballet, as well as her insistence that people of all body types and ages can learn ballet.” The student described McNeal as always approachable and involved with the progress of each student as a dancer.

Rick Malmgren, associate professor and department chair, described Humphries as a valued member of the visual arts department for the last 12 years. “He teaches across a wide array of courses in that curriculum, from Intro to Graphic Arts to Desktop Publishing and including video editing.”
