Jul. 13, 2007

Events

The Moonlight Troupers drama club of Anne Arundel Community College has selected the award-winning Broadway musical "Ragtime" for its Nov. 8-18 production at the Pascal Center for Performing Arts on the Arnold campus.

Students and community members are welcome to audition for the show at 7 p.m. Monday and Tuesday, Sept. 10 and 11. Come prepared to sing 16 bars of a Broadway-type song, dress for dance or movement and take music for the pianist; no auditions will be a cappella.

Callbacks are 7 p.m. Wednesday, Sept. 12. Auditions and callbacks are in the Pascal Center for Performing Arts. The Arnold campus is at 101 College Parkway (www.aacc.edu/locationsandmaps/maps.cfm).

Actors of a wide range of age, size and ethnicity are needed. Roles include six principal men, five principal women, one boy and one girl, all capable of singing solo, plus a large singing, dancing chorus. Members of the chorus also perform minor roles.

This 1998 Tony award-winning production weaves together three story lines reflecting the contradictions of wealth and poverty, freedom and prejudice, hope and despair, and love and hate. Show-stopping tunes include "Getting Ready Rag," "Your Daddy's Son," "Wheels of a Dream" and "Make Them Hear You."

Directing the show is Barbara Marder of Arnold, AACC department chair of performing arts. Ray Ascione of Annapolis, retired commander of the U.S. Naval Academy Band and director of the AACC Concert Band, will serve as music director with Marsha Goldsmith of Edgewater as vocal coach. Rob Berry of Greenbelt, AACC assistant professor of performing arts and faculty technical director, will design the set.

The book for the show is by Terrence McNally with lyrics by Lynn Ahrens and music by Stephen Flaherty. The production is based on the novel "Ragtime" by E.L. Doctorow.

            Performance times are 8 p.m. Fridays, Nov. 9 and Nov. 16; at 8 p.m. Saturdays, Nov. 10 and Nov. 17; at 2 p.m. Sundays, Nov. 11 and 18; and at 7:30 p.m. Thursday, Nov. 15.

Tickets sales will begin Monday, Oct. 15, and will cost $15 for general admission, $12 for seniors, groups, children, AACC employees and outside students and $8 for AACC students. Call the theater box office at 410-777-2457. All seats are reserved. Let the box office know if someone in your party needs special accommodations.
