Community
The deadline has been extended to Aug. 8 to nominate social entrepreneurs for the 2007 Paul S. Sarbanes Spirit Awards.
Social entrepreneurs recognize problems in the community, seek new and innovative solutions to those problems and take positive action to make social change.
The Paul S. Sarbanes Center for Public and Community Service at Anne Arundel Community College in Arnold, Md. wants to honor individuals who make a difference in the world as social entrepreneurs and demonstrate the spirit of leadership, integrity and service that former U.S. Sen. Paul Sarbanes embodied throughout his decades of public service. National, local and student awards will be given.
Winners will be honored at the Paul S. Sarbanes Spirit Awards Dinner Saturday, Oct. 13, as part of the e-nnovations 2007 Mid-Atlantic Entrepreneurship Conference at the BWI Airport Marriott Hotel in Baltimore.
Nominees should be people who have initiated and implemented new ideas, programs or organizations that affect positive social change. There are three award categories:
National Award -- An individual whose social entrepreneurial contributions have made a significant impact on a national scope.
County Award -- An individual whose social entrepreneurial contributions have made a significant impact within Anne Arundel County.
Student/Alumni Award -- A student or recent college alumnus or alumna (ages 18 to 25 and within three years of receiving a degree or certificate) whose contributions have made a significant impact to address critical social problems on the local, regional or national level.
In the nomination, describe why this individual should receive the award in 500 words or less (about two pages). Be sure to include the following:
Unique characteristics of the social entrepreneur and inspirational stories about the nominee.
Also required for both the nominee and nominator are name, organization, mailing address, phone number, e-mail address and Web address.
Send nominations to Cathy Doyle by e-mail at chdoyle@aacc.edu or by mail to Anne Arundel Community College, Paul S. Sarbanes Center, 101 College Parkway, Arnold, MD 21012-1895.
Sarbanes is a former U.S. senator who represented Maryland from 1977 to 2007, the longest-serving senator in state history.
AACC's Sarbanes Center provides leadership and support to applied learning activities for the college and the community it serves. These activities offer college participants -- students, faculty and staff -- hands-on opportunities to learn through real-world experiences, working with government agencies, schools, businesses and nonprofit groups.
Award recipients are expected to attend the awards dinner, where former Sen. Sarbanes will make the presentations. The banquet is part of the first e-nnovations 2007 Mid-Atlantic Entrepreneurship Conference sponsored by the Entrepreneurial Studies Institute at AACC. The conference takes place earlier that day at the hotel and will feature hot topics and notable speakers.
