State Wellmobile Adds AACC as Site
Sept. 6, 2007
Education/Health
The Governor's Wellmobile program, which offers low-cost primary health care services to uninsured and underinsured state residents, is adding the Anne Arundel Community College Arnold campus as a clinical site effective Monday, Sept. 10.
The Wellmobile will park at a pull-in area on Ring Road between the Mathematics Building and the A. Cathryn Johnson Classroom Building from 1-5 p.m. Mondays for those with appointments or walk-in patients. Parking is free. Join officials at the site at 1 p.m. Monday, Sept. 17, for a brief ceremony kicking off the new community service.
Established by the governor's office in 1994, the program is managed by the University of Maryland School of Nursing. A certified family nurse practitioner on the faculty at the School of Nursing provides primary care services, with students at the undergraduate and graduate level and school faculty staffing the van. For instructional purposes, the Wellmobile is treated as a clinical site because it gives students experience in a community health setting.
Four Wellmobiles travel the state; in fiscal year 2007 the program logged 7,262 visits from state residents. Services include physical exams for student athletes; well child health visits; treatment of minor ailments such as allergies, respiratory infections and urinary tract infections; wellness checks (blood pressure, vision, hearing and cancer screenings); women's health issues; health education and referrals; along with access to prescriptions and medications for acute and chronic medical problems.
Nominal fees are charged with payment by cash or money order. For example, physicals cost $20 and treatment related to an illness or a general visit is $10. To schedule an appointment or for information, call AACC Health Services at 410-777-2480.
