March 30, 2009
The community is invited to attend a Saturday, April 4, ceremony and celebration of the official signing of the document transferring the Dr. Martin Luther King Jr. Memorial to Anne Arundel Community College.
Joining the 10 a.m. ceremony at the statue on the Arnold campus will be U.S. Sen. Benjamin L. Cardin, Maryland State NAACP President Gerald Stansbury, Anne Arundel County Councilman Daryl D. Jones, Annapolis City Council Alderwoman Classie Gillis Hoyle, Peerless Rens Club President John W. Wilson and former Delegate Kenneth L. Webster, who made King's birthday a state holiday in Maryland.
The ceremony will include musical performances, a salute to those who contributed funds to make the memorial a reality and laying of a wreath at the memorial to mark Dr. King’s assassination on April 4, 1968.
The Dr. Martin Luther King Jr. Breakfast Committee and Dr. Martin Luther King Jr. Awards Dinner Committee Inc. launched a fundraising campaign in 2005 for the memorial’s design and construction. The college celebrated the statue’s dedication in August 2006. Designed by sculptor Ed Dwight, the statue is the only memorial in Maryland honoring Dr. King.
The event will take place rain or shine. For information, call Carl Snowden, 410-576-6300.
