Anne Arundel Community College in April will recognize the national designation of April as Sexual Assault Awareness Month by offering a series of community events on the Arnold campus.
April 5 – 2-3:30 p.m. “Girls Fight Back!” is an event to help women of all ages learn new techniques for personal safety and self-defense. Leading the presentation is Erin Weed, founder of the national organization Girls Fight Back, who encourages audience participation to demonstrate the benefits of fighting “like a girl.”
This free event in the Pascal Center for Performing Arts is co-sponsored by the AACC Department of Public Safety, Student Life Office, Campus Activities Board and Health Services Office and Women’s Institute. For information call 410-777-2096.
April 6 – 1 p.m. and 7 p.m. “Speak” film (rated PG-13) viewing followed by discussion with panel of experts. “Speak” is a 2004 independent film based on the award-winning novel of the same title, follow a traumatized teen raped by a high school upperclassman who becomes mute to cope and her struggle to overcome social rejection, bullying, isolation and survive a confrontation with the rapist.
Discussing the film after the 1 p.m. showing will be representatives from the AACC Student Health Services office, YWCA sexual assault advocate and a therapist. The 7 p.m. panel consists of a safe nurse, who conducts the forensic exam at the hospital on victims; a police officer from a sexual assault unit; a sexual assault YWCA therapist; and a sexual assault advocate.

April 8 – 8-10 p.m. Concert, “Sweet Leda” is a local band performing new school funk, soul and pop in Annapolis establishments; event is sponsored by the AACC Public Safety Department. Proceeds will benefit the Sexual Assault Crisis Center safe house run by the YWCA of Annapolis and Anne Arundel County.
Admission to this event in the Student Union dining hall is $8 general admission and $5 for AACC students and employees with valid AACC ID. For information call 410-777-2096.
April 16 – 9 a.m. Event, Walk a Mile in Her Heels” is sponsored by the YWCA of Annapolis and Anne Arundel County and AACC Health Services. Men and women can don new high heels to walk a mile (four laps) on the AACC Siegert Field track. The event includes refreshments, games and information. Financial donations are welcome.
