First Award From Kauffman Fund Helps Dancers

April 20, 2012

The first award of $1,000 from the Professor Robert “Chief” Kauffman Fund for the Performing Arts helped the Anne Arundel Community College Dance Company attend the Northwest region of the American College Dance Festival in Utah this spring.

The AACC Board of Trustees this month recognized the company for its achievements at the festival. Twenty dancers attended and performed at the festival with company artistic director Lynda P. Fitzgerald, coordinator of performing arts – dance.

The fund was originally established in 1996 by Kauffman, an AACC professor of performing arts emeritus, who dedicated his 30-year career at the college to the performing arts. After his death in 2011, the fund was renamed to honor him. The college also dedicated the Robert E. Kauffman Theater on Aug. 10, 2011 to honor his contributions to the college and the community.

His widow Dotti Kauffman selected the dancers’ educational trip to the conference for funding. Individual, organization and corporate contributions to the fund are welcome; it supports the dance, music and theater arts programs within the AACC Performing Arts Department.

Out of 31 colleges and universities attending the regional dance festival, only three were community colleges. The AACC Dance Company performed two dances before a panel of judges while also participating in dance workshops and sessions. The company will perform the adjudicated pieces at its 8 p.m. concerts on Friday, May 4 and Saturday, May 5, at the Robert E. Kauffman Theater.
