Musical Performances Set at AACC May 9-11

Anne Arundel Community College will bring several of its performing groups to the stage in mid-May, the Encore Chorale, the AACC Concert Band and Wind Ensemble and the AACC Big Band and Small Jazz Ensemble.

The Encore Chorale, a group composed mainly of AACC’s LifeStages program in the Center on Aging, will present its “Spring Concert: A Salute to American Composers” at 7:30 p.m. Thursday, May 9. Conducted by Jeanne Kelly and Krystal Rickard McCoy, the lineup will include songs composed by Aaron Copland, Stephen Foster, Linda Thompson and Andre Thomas, as well as a medley of songs by Ira and George Gershwin. The evening also includes performance by The Sons of the Severn Barber Shop Choral Ensemble.

The AACC Concert Band and Wind Ensemble, directed by Bruce Mansfield, part-time music faculty member, will perform “An Evening with Great Composers,” at 8 p.m. Friday, May 10. Some of the composers and works selected include Ralph Vaughan Williams’ “Flourish for Wind Band,” “A Copland Tribute” to Aaron Copland, Claude-Michel Schonberg’s “Les Miserables,” Frank Ticheli’s “Amazing Grace,” James Swearinger’s “The Light Eternal” and James Curnow’s “Where Never Lark or Eagle Flew.”

The AACC Big Band, directed by Marty Knepp, a part-time faculty member, and the AACC Small Jazz Ensemble, directed by Ian Wardenski, AACC music instructor, will perform at 8 p.m. Saturday, May 11. The AACC Jazz Ensembles will present “Groovin’ Hard,” including works by Cole Porter, Miles Davis, Dave Brubeck, Buddy Rich, Pat Metheny, Bob Florence and Louis Bellson.

All events are in the Robert E. Kauffman Theater of the Pascal Center for Performing Arts on AACC’s Arnold campus, 101 College Parkway. The Encore Chorale concert is free. For information, visit this website or call 301-261-5747.

Admission is charged for both the AACC Concert Band and Wind Ensemble concert and the AACC Jazz Ensemble concert. Tickets are $10 general admission; $7 senior citizens, groups, students and AACC employees; $5 for those with valid AACC student ID.
