A team of culinary arts students from Anne Arundel Community College’s Hotel, Culinary Arts and Tourism Institute, led by Chef John Johnson, took first place in the Judges’ Choice category for the third consecutive year in the annual Gumbo Fest. Creating the gumbo for AACC were Erin Gregory of Edgewater, Ricky Rice of Pasadena, Carrie Svobode of Stevensville and Michael Willard of Annapolis.
The team was one of nine competitors, including professional chefs from restaurants, hotels and caterers.
Proceeds from the event support the operations of the Light House Homeless Prevention Support Center. The Light House provides over 80,000 meals annually to families, 6,500 pantry bags, and 36,000 bag lunches to families in need to the local community.
The college’s Hotel, Culinary Arts and Tourism Institute offers credit degrees and certifications; an Italian Culinary Internship; industry training including Bartender Certification, Certification in Sanitation and Casino Dealer School; professional student clubs; competitive teams; and scholarship opportunities.
