For Non-Traditional Students
Anne Arundel Community College (AACC) offers an array of services for non-traditional, adult and military veteran students. At AACC you have opportunities to connect with staff members who appreciate your many roles and responsibilities. You may feel that you are not prepared to compete with younger students in the classroom or you may feel extracurricular activities are a needless burden. Yet, students who attend class but leave campus without forming supportive relationships may exit the college before achieving their goals. At AACC you have opportunities to select a career, prepare for a job, identify new life and career goals and update your skills sets. If location is important to you, Anne Arundel Community College offers courses throughout the county. You are in the right place at the right time.

The admissions and enrollment process begins with submitting an application to the Admissions Office as well as an online application (the FAPSA) for financial aid. Completion of the Accuplacer placement test in the Testing Center or submission of SAT scores is the next step in the process. Visit the Counseling, Advising and Retention Services (CARS) office to select a program of study (major) and choose courses with the assistance of your academic advisor.
Adult students should be aware of the College Level Exam Program (CLEP). CLEP grants credit for prior learning. Many institutions recognize that learning can take place outside of the classroom as well as in formal settings. Adult students typically have a vast amount of experiential learning accumulated their lives. If you decide to take a CLEP exam talk to your academic advisor about its transferability to a four-year institution.
Resources
Advising services are available through the Counseling, Advising and Retention Services Office. Advisors understand adult students have competing priorities, multiple roles and varied schedules. CARS offer services throughout the day, in the evening, on weekends, online and via the web. Retention Services are offered in the CARS Office as well as in the Student Achievement and Success Program (SASP) office. Both departments encourage you to be successful by connecting you to faculty members, advisors, tutors and fellow students. During Student Success Month you are asked to meet with an academic advisor in CARS to create a success contract and learn about campus support services.
Student Life offers you an opportunity to participate in student organizations and clubs. Many of our academic clubs are appealing to adult students because they offer networking opportunities related to your intended field. We even have a student club for military veterans. Student Life is sponsors affordable, entertaining events suitable for the entire family. Drive-in movies, theatrical plays, Dance Company performances, professional sports tickets, tickets for the Baltimore Aquarium and concerts are a few of the activities available to you and your family. Drop by the Student Life Office or contact them at 410-777-2218 to learn more.
AACC is one of the few community colleges in Maryland offering an educational program for children, age two through five. Contact the Child Development Center (CDC) and inquire about day, evening and weekend hours for your child or grandchild. The CDC has a national license through the National Association for the Education of Young Children (NAEYC) and local accreditation through the Maryland State Department of Education (MSDE).
Online Services are available to all students. You can access the library, an advisor, tutoring, your AACC e-mail, registration, and most Student Services online. If you are considering an online course, contact Distance Learning to see if you have what it takes to successfully complete an online course. There are a number of wireless zones on campus. You are able to bring your laptop to campus and access the internet in most buildings.
As you juggle your daily commitments along with family and classes, relaxation becomes important. The Health Services office offers a stress relief room. We can provide stress reduction techniques, aromatherapy, nutrition and exercise information.
