Phlebotomy Technician

Program Overview
This accelerated credit cohort program is now offered in hybrid format and can be completed in eight weeks. Students attend class and lab full-time, four days a week, for seven weeks, then participate in a 90-hour unpaid clinical experience the last three weeks. Upon successful completion, students earn eight credits, a Letter of Recognition and are eligible to take the Certified Phlebotomy Technician (CPT) exam. This program may also be taken for continuing education.

Job Outlook
According to American Medical Technologists, a nonprofit allied health care certification agency, phlebotomy technicians are in high demand. While the average an hourly wage nationally is $7-10 per hour, it is common for wages in Maryland to be $11-14 per hour.

What are the requirements?
   • 18 years of age or older
   • High school graduate or GED
   • Eligible for English 111
   • Attend an upcoming orientation seminar 
   • Complete a School of Health Professions health form with recent physical examination and immunization history
   • Have a current American Heart Association CPR for Health Care Providers certification
   • Complete a criminal background check

What courses will I take? 
ACA 100 — Student Success (one credit hour) An orientation to college academic support skills, note taking, strengthening memory and concentration and time management. Assess your own learning style, choose a career path, set goals and develop an educational plan. Assists you in transition to college and helps develop tools to insure your academic success. BPA 136 — Keyboarding 1 (one credit hour) Provides basic computer keyboarding skills including the alpha/numeric keyboard, 10-key pad, command key functions and use of the mouse. No previous computer experience necessary.

MDA 125 — Phlebotomy (six credit hours) Prepares students for national certification as phlebotomists. Course content includes venipuncture theory and techniques, concepts of cardiovascular anatomy, physiology and terminology and an introduction to standard hospital laboratory tests. Laboratory practice focuses on venipuncture, capillary puncture and collection of blood samples for hematologic testing. Clinical laboratory begins in week eight of the program. Assigned hours are between 6:45 a.m. to 4 p.m. Monday through Friday. Note: Hybrid Course

Students must complete 90 hours of assigned clinical practicum. Final grade is based on written tests and a pass/fail in the clinical laboratory. Students who receive a final grade below C are awarded an F in the course.

Eligibility for national certification includes a final grade of C or better, work experience as a phlebotomist and payment of an additional fee to the certifying organization.

Attend an upcoming orientation program where staff will review the program requirements in detail and assist you in completing the college application and course registration.
