The Why, What, How, Where and When of Applied Sociology
Where can students study applied sociology? An increasing number of colleges and universities are offering applied and clinical sociology. Training in skills and knowledge come in several forms: Some undergraduate and graduate programs offer degrees in applied sociology; these usually involve students in a content area, methodology to DO applied work, and an internship experience. Others offer a certificate if a student takes specific requirements in applied sociology. Still other programs offer applied modules in a number of courses so that students can see how applied sociology is used in subject areas such as deviance, ethnic relations, or family sociology. Finally, and probably most common, many programs offer one or two courses in applied sociology. For students interested in pursuing a program in applied sociology, the American Sociological Association has a booklet listing programs. There are also organizations that serve applied sociologists in academic settings, organizations and business, agencies and government.
When can students study applied sociology? For students who become interested in the field, looking for an institution that offers undergraduate degrees or certificates is one way to get applied credentials. Be sure the program has a required applied internship. Many students complete their undergraduate degrees in sociology or related fields (psychology, social work, criminal justice) and pursue graduate work in applied sociology. These degrees generally lead to supervisory positions.
So Mom, there are many options for those with applied sociology training, and the career fields can be very rewarding to the individual and helpful to society.
