Summer Bridge Program - FAQs

Frequently Asked Questions

Previous page

Q. I HAVE A FULL-TIME JOB FOR THE SUMMER. IF I JOIN, WILL THIS IMPACT MY JOB?
A
. Because students enrolled in the program are required to attend daily for the four-week program and attend all-day Friday campus/cultural trips and a completion ceremony on the last Thursday, students need to arrange to work after 2 p.m. Mondays thru Thursdays, and Fridays after 4 p.m.
Note: The selection of students will be made prior to the orientation. Selected students will receive an acceptance letter with a reminder of the dates, time and location of the orientation and of the four-week program. Working students may wish to provide a copy of the acceptance letter to their employer.

Q. WHO CAN MY PARENT TALK TO REGARDING THIS PROGRAM?
A
. The best person to explain the program is a staff member of the Student Achievement & Success Program at 410-777-2530. AACC Admission or academic advisors can also answer some questions.

Q. WHAT TYPE OF SUPPORT WILL I RECEIVE AFTER COMPLETING SUMMER BRIDGE AND ENROLLING IN CLASSES FOR THE FALL?
A
. You will become a member of the Student Achievement & Success Program (SASP) where you will receive individualized support from advisors, mentors, tutors and other program participants. You will receive services which include developing educational plans, academic monitoring, mentoring, scholarships to eligible students, and referrals to other college services. The SASP office is also a very welcoming place to connect with other students, get your questions answered and find a good place to study. You and your fellow Bridge students will enroll together in a Student Success course (ACA-100) designed to help you with your study strategies.

Q. WHAT IF I CANNOT COMMIT TO THE TIME REQUIREMENT OF THE SUMMER BRIDGE PROGRAM, BUT I STILL PLAN TO ATTEND AACC AND WOULD LIKE SUPPORT?
A
. You may join the Student Achievement & Success Program (SASP) in the fall. SASP is created to provide motivated students who are either first in their families to attend college, low-income, may need to increase their academic skill level or ethnic minority support to persist in college and increase academic success. Services provided include developing educational plans, academic monitoring, mentoring, scholarships to eligible students, and referrals to other college services.

Q. I UNDERSTAND THAT THE SUMMER BRIDGE PROGRAM IS FREE, BUT IS THERE ANY ASSISTANCE FOR PAYING FOR COLLEGE?
A
. AACC believes no student should be restricted from attending college because of limited financial resources. Grants, scholarships, loans and/or employment programs, as well as a non interest payment plan are available to eligible students. To apply for these various sources of aid you must complete a Free Application for Federal Student Aid (FAFSA) at www.fafsa.ed.gov. Our school code is 002058.  It is important that you apply early.  Don’t hesitate to contact the Office of Student Financial Services if you have any questions.

Q. WHAT DO PAST BRIDGE STUDENTS HAVE TO SAY ABOUT THE PROGRAM?

  • “I didn’t know what college was about—until I got here.”
  • "It will help you prepare for college and it will help students to learn good study skills.”
  • “One thing that impressed me about the Summer Bridge Program was how many teachers were willing to take the time and help us.”
