Report: Maryland High Schools Rank #1 in Newsweek Study
According to a June 19, 2009 article, "Mid-Atlantic Excellence" in Newsweek magazine, Newsweek released its own analysis of its annual "America's Top High Schools," which identified the most challenging high schools in the country. Maryland had the highest percentage (29.5 percent) of high schools and students taking college-level tests. The Newsweek list, known as the Challenge Index, looks at student enrollment in Advanced Placement (AP), International Baccalaureate (IB), and Cambridge courses and tests. In the past few years, Maryland benefited from a surge of AP and IB test-taking.
In the Maryland Education Bulletin, Governor Martin O'Malley commented on the encouraging new results, stating, "...Maryland is ranked No. 1 in the nation because our test scores are up in every county, in every grade, in every subject and across every single demographic line."
