Cable Technician

Prepare for a career as a copper and fiber optic cabling technician in as little as seven weeks.

What does a copper and fiber optic cabling technician do?
The telecommunications field is growing and changing as voice communications, data, graphics, television and video are delivered in a variety of ways and at increasing speeds. Copper and fiber optic wiring technicians work to ensure that telecommunication systems including phones, fax machines, phone switches, routers, modems, personal computers, Internet hook-ups, broadband, radios and local area network (LAN) lines are set up correctly and are operating as required by industry standards.

What is the job outlook?
According to the U.S. Bureau of Labor Statistics an increasing number of telecommunications services will cause overall employment in the telecommunications industry to increase. In addition, the retirement of workers in the telecommunications industry in the next decade will create many job opportunities. Telecommunications technicians can expect to earn between $11 and $30 per hour.

What is the training?
The training consists of two noncredit continuing education courses that together run for seven weeks. Students must register for the following noncredit courses at the same time.
OCA-325 - Introduction to Network Cabling Copper
OCA-326 - Introduction to Network Cabling Fiber Optics

What award or credential will I earn?
Upon successful completion of both network cabling courses, students will earn an AACC continuing education certificate and be eligible to sit for the Certified Fiber Optics Technician examination administered by the Fiber Optical Association.

What are the requirements to enroll?
To enroll in this training, you must be a high school graduate or have passed the GED exam.
