What are CLEP Exams? The College Level Examination Program (CLEP) is a nationally recognized credit by exam program. CLEP is considered transfer credit and does not meet the college's residency requirements. Credit by exam is for credit in courses offered at AACC and is available only in subjects in which CLEP is not offered and is considered resident credit.  

As of July 1, 2008, a fee of $20 goes to AACC and a fee of $70 goes to Educational Testing Service (ETS). 

Who is eligible to take CLEP exams?
Anyone who has an admission application on file at AACC.  

How do I register for the exam? 
Print and complete the CLEP registration form.PDF Submit it to the Testing Office (SUN 240) either by mail or in person. Pay by check or money order made payable to AACC, or by credit or debit card. You must take the exam either on the scheduled date or the next test date, or the fee is forfeited. A fee of $20 goes to AACC and a fee of $70 (as of 7/1/08) goes to Educational Testing Service (ETS). Pay the $20 fee by check or money order payable to AACC or by credit or debit card. This fee must accompany your CLEP application. On the day of testing, pay the $70 fee  (as of 7/1/08)  by credit card or by check payable to Educational Testing Service (ETS). How much do the exams cost? A $102 (as of 7/1/09) nonrefundable exam fee entitles you to free posting of scores and free CLEP transcripts from the college. As of July 1, 2009, a fee of $30 goes to AACC and a fee of $72 goes to Educational Testing Service (ETS).

How many CLEP exams can I take?
Two exams in the morning testing period and one during the evening testing period. It is possible to take three exams in one month. Each test takes 90 minutes. Please allow an extra 30 minutes for testing directions.

How will I know my score? The tests are administered online. You will receive your scores immediately.

How are CLEP exams scored and what do I have to score to receive credit? Every correct answer is computed as one point. These points are totaled and converted into scaled scores. These scores range from 20-80. A scaled score of 50 is the passing score for each exam at AACC.

What do I have to score to receive credit? Passing scores for AACC are listed at the CLEP score link.

If I fail to get a passing score, can I take the exam again? Yes. You may take the same CLEP test again after a six-month waiting period.

Do scores count in my grade point average? No.

What if I want to take a CLEP exam at AACC and transfer the credits to another college? It is the student’s responsibility to verify that the CLEP exam is accepted at any other College or University to which the student planning to transfer. 

How can I prepare? A suggested list of references, along with sample questions, is in the “CLEP Handbook” available at the Andrew Truxal Library reference desk. You may also want to see the College Board resources.

 Are testing accommodations provided for students with disabilities? Yes. Students with disabilities must provide written documentation to Counseling, Advising and Retention Services (410-777-2308) and must indicate the need for accommodations on their CLEP application form.

It is the student’s responsibility to verify that the CLEP exam is accepted at any other College or University to which the student planning to transfer.
