Textbooks

Thematic Learning Communities are a great way to present course materials. AACC is currently offering Thematic Learning Communities using two courses. General Education courses are extremely well suited for this format since many of these courses apply to most curriculum. See below for details on how you can participate.

How does it work?

  • The same students take all classes of the set in the same term.
  • Instructors coordinate content and assignments related to the theme.

Why offer courses in this format?

  • Increased interaction between faculty and students
  • Stronger connections between courses and learning
  • Potential for smaller classes
  • Courses offered at prime times
  • Students motivated to succeed

How do I participate in a Thematic Learning Community?

  • Faculty identify the courses and the theme.
  • In the fall semester, a call for proposals is announced.
  • Faculty submit proposals for the following academic year.
  • Proposals are reviewed by the Thematic Learning Community committee (a sub-committee of the Teaching and Learning committee.)
  • Faculty work together to coordinate content (release time and/or summer stipend may be available.)
