Are Online Courses for You?

Online courses at Anne Arundel Community College offer students an opportunity to take classes that fit their schedule and learning style. Distance learning students work more independently than is typical for regular in-class courses. This means that online students are responsible for their own success by structuring their time, meeting deadlines, and completing assignments.

To better understand how online courses at AACC work and to see if you would be a good candidate to take an online course, follow these steps:

Step 1: Consider your learning style and computer experience.

Do the following statements describe you?

  • I understand written instructions.
  • I am self-motivated.
  • I am capable of independent learning.
  • I can create, save and manage files on my computer.
  • I have an e-mail address.
  • I know how to send e-mail attachments.
  • I plan to allocate as much time in my schedule for this online course as I would for a classroom course.
  • I know how to download and install software from the Internet.
  • I can manage my time wisely.
  • I am comfortable asking questions.

If these statements do not describe you, a classroom setting is probably better suited for you.

If most of these statements describe you, you should consider taking an online course. Proceed to Step 2.

Step 2: Computer Requirements

AACC uses software called ANGEL to deliver its online courses. To access AACC's online courses, your computer must have:

  • Internet access
  • Anti-virus software
  • A full-featured, ANGEL compatible browser with the appropriate settings. See technical requirements for more detailed information.
  • Your browser configured to disable call waiting. Many courses have online quizzes that allow one attempt. If you receive a call and are kicked offline during your attempt, your attempt is counted and you will be unable to re-take the quiz when you log back on. In your dial-up properties, there should be an option for disabling call waiting. Use your browser's help feature or speak to your Internet Service Provider for instructions.

Note: Your course may require additional software details will be provided in the course syllabus.

If you meet the computer requirements, proceed to Step 3.

Step 3: Register for your course

Register for an online course as you would for a classroom course. Register online, by phone, by fax, by mail or in person. For details go to the Records & Registration Web page.

Step 4: Access your course

As mentioned earlier, AACC uses ANGEL to provide access to our online courses. To access your course, you will go through MyAACC. This secure site provides Anne Arundel Community College students and faculty with a personalized Web site. This Web site allows you to register for courses, keep up with campus activities and organizations, and access your credit online course(s).

Accessing your online course:

  • Begin your online course on the first day of class
  • Go to the college's portal page, MyAACC
  • Sign-on directions are on the Web site
  • Click on "My Courses" tab, select the semester, then click on your online course
  • Your personal homepage will open in ANGEL
  • Select the course you wish to open under the Courses list
