Study the chemistry of the families of organic compounds, emphasizing preparations, reactions, and mechanisms of reactions. Learn to apply spectroscopy to determine structure, and preview compounds of biological importance. Synthesize representative organic compounds in the laboratory. Use modern methods of analysis, including infrared and nuclear magnetic resonance spectroscopy. Lab fee $70. Prerequisite: CHE 213 or CHE 213H and eligibility for Honors courses. Note: Also offered as CHE 214H; credit is not given for both CHE 214 and CHE 214H.
