Whether you are getting started in the teaching profession or continuing your studies, we want you to be successful! AACC's TEACH Institute provides support and resources to aid and enhance the student learning experience.

Praxis Information

In order to become certified to teach in Maryland, all teachers must pass a state-approved basic skills test. AAT degree-seeking students must meet this Maryland State Department of Education (MSDE) testing requirement prior to graduation.

Since September 1, 2014, the PRAXIS testing option required by MSDE is the PRAXIS Core Academic Skills tests. The tests assess high-school level skills in reading, writing and math.

Passing Scores

Students must achieve the following passing scores in order to meet the basic skills testing requirement for certification and completion of the AAT:

Reading - 156

Writing - 162

Math – 150

Note: Until summer 2017, students who passed any section of the PRAXIS I can complete the Basic Skills requirement by achieving passing scores on any remaining sections of the PRAXIS Core.  For example, a student who has passed PRAXIS I Reading and PRAXIS I Writing, only needs to pass the PRAXIS Core Math exam in order to meet the Basic Skills requirement for graduation and certification.  When combining PRAXIS I and PRAXIS Core scores to meet the requirement, students cannot use a composite score.

MSDE (and AACC) will also accept qualifying test scores on the SAT, ACT or GRE.

Fieldwork

All Associate of Arts in Teaching degree programs approved by the Maryland Higher Education Commission must provide at least 45 hours of supervised field experience. Such an experience is also an essential component of the Associate of Applied Science degree in Early Childhood Development. At Anne Arundel Community College, we believe that distributing the fieldwork experience over three separate courses has many benefits.

Teacher education students in all teacher education degree programs and some certificate programs are required to submit to a complete criminal background check in order to participate in the required fieldwork experience. Participation in the required fieldwork experience is contingent upon satisfactory completion of the criminal background check. If a student is denied fieldwork placement due to a background check result, which is required to meet program competencies, the student shall be dismissed from the program and his/her registration withdrawn from courses related to the program of study.

Below is an outline to the fieldwork process as well as many of the necessary forms.
